Slowinski at Fairfax SYC (5th from left)

We’ve been busy!! As the fencing season winds down before nationals in July, our fencers have been travelling, bringing home the bling and representing the academy well.

Last weekend, Maia Slowinski and Cierra Cottman finished their events in the medal rounds at a local Regional Youth Circuit tournament. Cottman earned a bronze in Y12 Women’s Epee, finishing third of six, and placed in the top eight of the Y12 Women’s Foil event. Slowinksi took home two silvers in Y14 Women’s Epee as well as foil. We couldn’t be more proud that she, an unrated epee fencer at the time, went the distance with an A, losing the bout only 10-15. Slowinski is now holds a D rating in epee and she also finished 11th of over 60 inY14 Women’s Foil!

The weekend prior to the RYC, Andrew Wright, our top rated epee fencer who fenced and trained in college, placed half-way in the open epee event at UCF’s “Black and Gold Open”. Taking twelfth in the foil event, WGFA alumna Elese Mathis is still wrecking the competition with her aggressive and intimidating style of fencing. Nathanael Vanetta, one of our newer competitors, also braved the same tough event. Kudos to his effort and spirit! Hang in there!
